Factors Affecting Suicide in Middle-Aged Patients Hospitalized for Intentional Self-harm

Abstract
Middle-age accounts for more than 40% of the total population. And Suicide is the leading cause of death for them. However, there are rare studies about middle-aged suicide and self-harm. The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting suicide in middle-age patients hospitalized for intentional self-harm by patient characteristic, disease characteristic and dangerous characteristic from 2009 to 2018. Study data was using Korean national hospital discharge in-depth survey data produced by Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Study subjects were 84,139 inpatients and analyzed frequency, chi-square test, and logistic regression by using STATA 12.0(StataCorp, College Station, Texas). The results of this study show that influencing factors of suicide were woman(OR, 0.328, CI. 0.233-0.461), depression(OR, 0.381, CI. 0.227-0.639), family conflict(OR, 0.525, CI. 0.314-0.877), suffocation(OR, 29.984, CI. 9.914-90.687), fall(OR, 5.742, CI. 1.606-20.532), fire/flame(OR, 13.113, CI. 3.240-53.077). These findings are expected that it will help enable more precise medical practices in the management and prevention of middle-aged suicide and help make effective decisions.
